I. INTRODUCTION

This position is located in

Serves as an advanced trainee assisting higher graded scientists performing research into critical problems of fisheries resource management. Work supports the goal of protecting, restoring, and managingthe use of coastal and ocean resources through an ecosystem approach to management.

II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in investigations of long range and short term problems and may contribute to scientific papers for publication.

III. FACTOR LEVELS

Factor 1 - Research Situation

Receives advanced training in research techniques and methods related to performing applied research in fisheries science. Work assignments are of limited scope and complexity such as assisting higher level fisheries researchers with portions of an experiment or the development of portions of a research paper. Assignments are intended to prepare the employee for work of a higher level.

Factor 2 - Supervision Received

Supervisor presents and explains new work assignments. Incumbent independently performs routine and recurring assignments. More difficult assignments are accompanied by instructions as to the problem to be studied, the extent to which studies are to be carried, the approach desired and the general techniques to be applied. The supervisor spot checks work in progress and provides instructions as difficulties are encountered.

Factor 3 - Guidelines and Originality

Established methods, procedures, and techniques are available. However, incumbent must apply a degree of resourcefulness to adapt them to the fisheries research situation. Incumbent independently applies standard or specified research methods, tests, techniques, and procedures and develops simple work plans and preliminary conclusions. Judgment and some initiative are applied in planning simple details of the work.

This position is non-exempt from coverage under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
