I. INTRODUCTION

This position is located in

Performs research on critical problems of fisheries resource management. Does so independently, as a member of a research team, or as the team leader of a small study. Work supports the goal of protecting, restoring, and managingthe use of coastal and ocean resources through an ecosystem approach to management.

II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Writes scientific papers for publication, investigates long range and short term problems, and recommends solutions for conservation, habitat preservation, and protection of the fisheries resource.

III. FACTOR LEVELS

Factor 1 - Research Situation Degree B, 4 points

Researches fisheries problems of considerable scope and complexity, including resource assessment and conservation and endangered species issues. Novel and sometimes unconventional approaches must be applied to the fisheries problem to be investigated. Problems often are difficult to define.

Author of one or more major publications of considerable interest and value to fisheries science. The publications answer important questions and add to scientific knowledge. The results represent important changes to products, processes and techniques.

Factor 2 - Supervision Received Degree B, 4 points

Has considerable freedom in identifying, defining, and selecting specific problems for study. Independently formulates hypotheses and develops and carries out plan of attack. The supervisor is kept informed through general discussions. Scientific recommendations are normally followed with completed work reviewed for overall results and adherence of the fisheries mission.

Factor 3 - Guidelines and Originality Degree B, 4 points

Develops and applies new techniques and original methods to attack problems in fisheries science. Researcher shows creativity and applies a high degree of insight to finding solutions to fisheries problems. Incumbent must analyze and synthesize complex fisheries information of precedent-setting nature.

Factor 4 - Qualifications and Scientific Contributions Degree B, 8 points

Personal performance of research marks scientist as a significant contributor. Authors one or more papers of considerable interest. Demonstrates leadership by leading a productive research team or leadership in the conception and formulation of productive research ideas for others.
