I. INTRODUCTION

This position involves planning and fabricating complex research and prototype instruments made from a variety of materials and used to detect, measure, record, and regulate heat, pressure, speed, vibration, sound, illumination, biomedical phenomena, and other areas of interest to scientific, engineering, (or medical) personnel.

II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plans, lays out, fabricates, and modifies moderately complex devices and instruments associated with a single broad trade category. Works from blueprints, sketches, oral instructions or other specifications.

III. FACTOR LEVELS

1. Skill and Knowledge - Independently plans, lays out, sets up; determines proper materials, procedures, equipment, and tools in the completion of work. Requires ingenuity and creativity to develop solutions to unusual or unique problems. Skilled in (1) using non-standard tools and equipment in the completion of highly complex, unusual tasks, and (2) determining non-standard uses for standard and non-standard tools and equipment to achieve desired results. Requires high level of knowledge of shop math including trigonometric, algebraic, & geometric formulas.

2. Responsibility - Receives assignments as work orders or oral instructions which require independent review and interpretation. Improvises, develops new procedures, solves unusual problems and substitutes inappropriate or inadequate materials, tools, equipment and procedures. More complicated instruments require more judgments & decisions concerning greater variety of alternative methods, materials, and work sequences, and planning, assembling, and testing techniques. Assumes responsibility for complete assignments by coordinating the effort of other workers on large instruments.

3. Physical Effort - Requires standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, pulling, pushing and climbing up and down ladders or scaffolding; frequently handles objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally handles objects weighing as much as 50 pounds; hoists and hand trucks are available for heavier items.

4. Working Conditions - Frequently works inside, occasionally outside. There is a possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, or broken bones and may be exposed to fumes, radiation, or unstable biological conditions. Required to wear protective devices such as aprons, gloves, safety glasses, and hard hat
