I. INTRODUCTION

Serves as an electronics engineer providing limited and basic engineering support to senior technical staff and receiving projects of limited scope and difficulty designed to develop technical engineering competencies.

II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The engineer assists higher graded engineers and/or accomplishes limited phases of larger electronics projects assigned to higher graded engineers. Typical assignments include duties such as: performing basic engineering analyses and calculations; reviewing specifications, design drawings, specifications, plans and procedures, conducting systems diagnostics, installing subsystems and preparing reports for technical review by the senior staff, providing engineering support services to higher graded engineers; assisting in the testing, installation, modification or maintenance of electronics systems and components; planning work procedures and researching available references for technical problem solving.

III. FACTOR LEVELS

1. Knowledge Required by the Position FL 1-6, 950 pts

Professional knowledge of electronics engineering principles and concepts, a sound understanding of standard scientific and engineering principles, practices, and methods; and the ability to adapt them to specific situations in order to perform the electronics engineering work involved in accomplishing limited phases of larger electronics projects or assisting senior engineers.

2. Supervisory Controls FL 2-2, 125 pts

Supervisor provides assignments with specific instructions as to the objectives, scope and procedures to be used. Work of a repetitive nature is performed independently. The employee consults with the supervisor or senior engineer on any deviations, problems or unusual situations. Upon completion, work is reviewed for accuracy and adherence to standard practices, and to assure conformance with requirements.

3. Guidelines FL 3-2, 125 pts

Guidelines include plans and specifications, pertinent scientific and engineering literature, operational procedures, and precedents. Guidelines are detailed and usually applicable to the assigned work. Limited judgment is required in selecting standard practices and data to be applied to specific problems where precedents are applicable. Situations where guidelines are inadequate are referred to the supervisor or higher graded engineer.

4. Complexity FL 4-3, 150 pts

Assignments involve primarily small or conventional systems, but also include assisting higher graded engineers on large, complex projects. Work requires the independent application of a variety of established engineering practices. Some problems necessitate minor adaptation of standard techniques.

5. Scope and Effect FL 5-2, 75 pts

The purpose is to perform a variety of electronics engineering and technician assignments designed to provide experience and to relieve higher grade engineers of detailed and routine "hands-on" test and evaluation work. Work efforts have an impact on the accuracy and reliability, as well as the timeliness of the test projects for which the higher engineers are responsible.

6. Personal Contacts Level 6-2, 25 pts

Personal contacts are with other engineers, scientists, and engineering technicians within the immediate organization.

7. Purpose of Contacts Level 7-1, 20 pts

Contacts are chiefly to gain advice or assistance, to report on status or results of work and to get information on the condition of existing systems.

8. Physical Demands Level 8-1, 5 pts

Work is normally sedentary, although bending, climbing, and crawling are necessary on some assignments.

9. Work Environment Level 9-1 5 pts

Work is usually performed in an office or laboratory setting.

TOTAL POINTS- 1480

This position is non-exempt from coverage under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
