The Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM), Office of Training and Knowledge Management (OTKM), in partnership with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) and the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), is proud to announce the 2008/2009 Department Mentoring Program. This program continues to expand for both mentors and interested mentees and is open Department-wide. There are no costs for a participant’s organization because program funds are provided though the Department’s Working Capital Fund.

When individuals commit time and energy in a mentoring relationship, all parties benefit. The benefits may include expansion of a career network, enhancement of personal and social skills, and a strengthening of communication skills. Mentors can help individuals achieve greater career success by sharing lessons learned, communicating general knowledge, and offering advisory services. Mentees benefit by obtaining career advice from someone with experience and common interests in a private and non-threatening relationship.

All program participants will have access to formal training, coaching, a mentoring system to aid in partnership matching, and an opportunity to meet fellow employees with similar interests. We will hold a Mentoring Orientation Session on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, from 1:30-5:00 p.m. in room 6800 of the Herbert C. Hoover Building. This presentation will provide program participants with an understanding of mentoring and information on how the formal matching process works. In addition, this session will include a networking session to give prospective participants an opportunity to meet. Once you are signed-up in the Mentoring System, you will receive information on future training sessions.

If you wish to serve as a mentor or join as a mentee in the Department Mentoring Program, please sign-up in the Mentoring System as follows: Go to https://www.mentoringconnection.com and click on the “Sign-Up Here” link and enter the group ID: DOCDWM. Then select “Mentor” or “Mentee.” Mentors may identify a specific leadership program to partner with including the Aspiring Leaders Development Program (ALDP) or the Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP). Mentors and mentees may elect to join the “general pool” by selecting the “Department Program.” Either way, we will find excellent mentor and mentee partnerships for you. We can assist individuals with specific mentor pairing requests once information is provided in the mentoring system.

If you have any questions regarding the program, please email Mike Cohen, the Program Manager at Mcohen3@doc.gov. For system questions, please contact Jennifer Sellers at The Training Connection, Inc. at 703-551-0734 or by email to JSellersttc@comcast.net.

All training classes are physically accessible to people with disabilities. You may request sign language interpretation by email to slanguage@doc.gov or by calling 202-482-4481. For other accommodations, please contact Mike Cohen at Mcohen3@doc.gov
